CBI begins probe in Jawahar Bagh violence

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has initiated a probe into the June 2, 2016 violence in Jawahar Bagh in Mathura when members of the Swadhin Bharat Vidhik Satyagrah led by its leader Ram Vriksh Yadav clashed with the local police.

Twenty nine people including the then SP of Mathura Mukul Dwivedi were killed and over 100 were injured in the incident. Yadav himself was also killed in the clashes.

A division bench of Allahabad High Court had on March 2 ordered a CBI probe into the matter asking it to investigate the circumstances leading to the unlawful occupation of public land (Jawahar Bagh), worth about Rs 5000 crore, by the self-styled cult leader Ram Vriksh Yadav and his followers.

The court gave CBI two months' time to prove the violence and the state government's inaction and submit a sealed report to the court.
