Uber Suspends Testing Of Self-Driving Cars After Crash

Uber has taken its fleet of self-driving vehicles off the roads while it investigates a Friday night crash that left one of its SUVs sitting on its side.

Police in Tempe, Arizona, were called to a crash at approximately 6:25 p.m. Friday to find that the Uber SUV had been hit when another vehicle failed to yield, according to the Tempe Police Department. No serious injuries were reported.

The accident once again raises questions about the safety of autonomous driving technology and how it will interact with other drivers on the road. There was a person behind the wheel at the time of the Friday's accident, but an Uber spokeswoman said the vehicle was in self-driving mode and that there were no backseat riders. The company's self-driving fleet has been taken off the roads in Arizona pending the investigation. The company also suspended test vehicles in Pittsburgh, where its autonomous cars also pick up passengers, and San Francisco, where it does not.

Uber has been moving aggressively to put its self-driving vehicles on the road with passengers in the backseat. As a precaution, the vehicles have a safety engineer who can take control if necessary. Others that have been developing the technology longer, including Waymo, Google's self-driving car company, have been hesitant to put ordinary people in their cars without further testing.

Many expect self-driving vehicles will enter the market through ride-sharing services, such as Uber and Lyft. Those services tend to be more popular in urban environments, where autonomous cars will be most useful, and they've already conditioned users to put their safety and trust in the hands of relative strangers.

The crash comes as Uber grapples with a wide range of crises. Among them, several Uber employees have been accused of stealing intellectual property from Waymo and using it as the basis for Uber's self-driving technology. The outcome of that legal fight could affect Uber's future significantly.

Automobile and technology companies alike are dumping billions of dollars into the technology with the idea that one day our cars will no longer need human drivers.

But that future is still far off. In the meantime, vehicles equipped with self-driving capabilities will share the road with human motorists. That will put autonomous vehicles in situations that may seem simple but are actually difficult to navigate, such as what to do when another vehicle honks its horn.

Sikh for Justice blames Congress for delaying the hearing of Genocide Trial in US court

AMRITSAR: Sikh for Justice, a US based advocacy group, has blamed on Congress party for attempting to manipulate and delay the Genocide Trial before US court by filing motions on 'baseless' grounds.

Legal Advisor to SFJ, Gurpatwant Singh Panun informed on Thursday that Congress (I) had no defense on the merits against the charges of planning and carrying out attacks on Sikhd during 1984 so it was attempting to delay the trial.

He said after unsuccessful attempt to challenge the jurisdiction of the US Federal Court to hear the Sikh Genocide case, the Congress now seeks dismissal of the claims filed by victims of November 1984 based on the lapse of 25 years.

"The May 29th motion by the Congress party states that killing of Sikhs took in November 1984 and the victims filed the case in March 2011 when the statute of limitation had already expired" said he.

He informed that Motilal Vora, Treasurer and MP of Congress (I) also gave an affidavit to the US court in support of motion to dismiss the complaint filed by victims of November 1984. "Vora's affidavit to the US court states that "no summons and complaint from the New York Litigation was delivered to the Indian National Congress Party in accordance with the Hague Service Convention. The affidavit further states that "Indian National Overseas Congress is not a subsidiary or affiliate of the Indian National Congress Party of India" said he.

Referring to Vora's affidavit, Pannun stated that it has become obvious that Congress (I) being the ruling party of India was thwarting the delivery of summons.

Muslim family observes kids’ ‘mundan’ ceremony in Giridih

DHANBAD: A traditional Muslim family observed the 'mundan ceremony' (ceremonial tonsuring) of their two children - both boys -- at Giridih's based Jharkhand Dham temple on the occasion of Basant Panchami on Wednesday. The family believed that the birth of the two children is because of blessings of Baba Jharkhandi Nath (Lord Shiva).

The family also performed all relevant rituals starting on Wednesday with 'tilak utsav' of Lord Shiva and concluding with 'dugdha abhishek' (pouring milk and water along with other ingredients on the Shivalinga) on Thursday.

In 2014, the 65-year-old farmer Pir Mohammad of Taranakho village at Rajdhanwar block in Giridih was worried when no children were born in his family for decades. He prayed for several days at the Jharkand Dham temple. Pir Mohammad, who had two married sons, promised to perform all relevant rituals if his wish came true.

The 38-year-old Amisha Khatun, the youngest daughter-in-law of Pir Mohammad and mother of the two-year-old Sahil, said: "My sister in-law and I became mothers after he visited the temple. Though our father-in-law died a couple of months ago, we did not forget his promise to the Almighty. Our family had no children for almost 20 years, but we were blessed with two male children within 45 days."

After sweep in UP, Telangana BJP plans for 2019

HYDERABAD: The BJP on Saturday put the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti on notice, saying the party will focus on coming to power in the newest state of India in 2019. Riding on the winds of strong performance of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, the Telangana BJP said the national leadership of the party is all set to 'keep its eyes' on Telangana. As part of this, the BJP national president Amit Shah is expected to visit the state next month on a three-day trip.

Even as the Telangana BJP launched into celebrations of the party's stupendous show in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, chief minister and ruling TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao reached out to prime minister Narendra Modi. In a brief letter, Rao said: "Respected Modi ji, I congratulate you on the phenomenal success of your party in the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand assembly elections. I am sure this will inspire you to work with renewed energy towards progress and prosperity of the nation."

State BJP president Dr K Laxman said, "We will go to the people, reach out to every village and bring Narendra Modi's policies closer to them. Simultaneously, we will highlight the anti-people policies of the TRS government."

Asked about a BJP-TRS alliance in 2019, Laxman said his party will go it alone. "Even in the recent Mumbai civic elections, the BJP went alone and against long-time ally Shiv Sena," he said.

Shiv Sena Seeks Explanation From its MP For Assaulting Air India Staffer

Mumbai: Shiv Sena on Thursday sought an explanation from its Lok Sabha MP Ravindra Gaikwad, who allegedly hit an AirIndia staffer at IGI airport in Delhi with a slipper, and remained defiant over the incident.

"The party has sought an explanation from Gaikwad over the incident. The Sena does not condone violence of any kind," Harshal Pradhan, media adviser to Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, told PTI.

"We have also sought a version of the incident from the AirIndia (AI) staffer. The Sena has a workers union in Air India," he said. Earlier, Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande said, "Shiv Sena does not subscribe to such reaction by any of our party members.

Gaikwad is known as Ravi Sir and is very popular in his constituency. He has worked a lot towards solving the water problems of his region."

Budget carrier IndiGo today said it will support any move which bars unruly passengers from flying. "We will support a no-fly list," IndiGo President and Whole Time Director Aditya Ghosh told PTI.

Narendra Modi, in Twitter banter with Ravi Shastri, used wit and cricketing jargon to produce magic PR

Every now and then you hear of Narendra Modi's PR machine, its Indo-American antecedents, and how it uses clever slippery tactics to keep the prime minister in the limelight. To the best of my knowledge, no one has quite identified the team behind these machinations, and we perhaps give Modi less credit than he deserves. Even if there is this crack SAS equivalent of public relations honchos plotting and planning strategies, it's still got to get the Modi good governance stamp of approval.

For example, the clever way in which he responded to Ravi Shastri's congratulatory note on Twitter with a little bit of cricket lingo thrown in. That requires savvy, a developed sense of wit, and a certain flair not usually seen in our politicians.

This is where Modi scores. He adds that extra dimension and makes the message a little more thoughtful. If you are on his side you can see it as smart. If you are not a fan of his, you can dismiss the chat as no big deal. Which is true — it really is no big deal. But the others don't do it, and the effort he puts in creating bespoke situations for full effect is a sign of character. A PR executive tells me that Modi has mastered this art.

If there is a team functioning to make him marketable 24/7, and have him quoted in multiple fashion so that the rest of the competition is eclipsed, they have also introduced him to being pithy and brief yet make an impact.
